Quick Look at Formative Assessments
Formative assessments can be very powerful tools. It is important to keep a few things in mind when creating and using these types of assessments. Formative assessments should be viewed as part of the instruction process and not part of the grading process. Think of these as "checks for understanding". The feedback from these assessments should help guide where you are going, not necessarily where you want to end up. Another important component of these types of assessments is the idea of timely-feedback. If you can find out, almost immediately, what your students are struggling with you can reteach sooner. Things that are retaught directly after confusion will prove to be much more effective. Lastly, visual feedback can be very effective with students. Providing a graph, chart or image for results can catch the attention of many students that otherwise may not be interested in the feedback. Educators have been using formative assessments for a very long time but technology is helping provide more timely and engaging feedback to students and teachers.
